Amer relishing a more active leadership role with Meralco
Three games into the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup, the former four-time NCAA champion with the San Beda Red Lions is making sure the Bolts are buzzing.

With Jimmy Alapag enjoying retirement, the keys to Meralco have been handed to his heir apparent Baser Amer.

And so far in the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup, the former four-time NCAA champion with the San Beda Red Lions is making sure the Bolts offense is buzzing.

After yet another disastrous All-Filipino campaign, the turnaround for Meralco has been pretty quick, earning solo first in the mid-season tournament with a clean 3-0 mark.

Amer has emerged as the top local in coach Norman Black's rotation so far, averaging a cool 16 points per game all while making sure Meralco maintains its great rhythm even as import Alex Stephenson continues to work his way to basketball shape.

For the sophomore guard, the key has been taking a more active role in terms of leadership. He kind of has no choice so basically, he just embraced it.

"Naging leader lang ako sa team. Hindi lang ako, pati si [Chris] Newsome, si Anjo [Caram]. Kailangan mag-take charge kami sa laro, kailangan mapasunod namin sila sa mga gusto ni coach," Amer said.

"Kami yung guards sa loob eh [with Newsome]. Wala na si Jimmy [Alapag], kinausap kami ni coach Norman na kailangan kami yung coach sa loob," he added.

Speaking of Alapag, Amer revealed that the former Gilas captain has been a huge help on his development. Jimmy and another certain legendary guard actually.

"Nung naglalaro siya tsaka hindi [Alapag], same naman. Lagi kaming tinutulungan niya sa practice at sa game," he said.

"Si coach Ronnie Magsanoc din, tinututukan kami sa practice talaga para pag sa game ready na kami," Amer added.

With those mentors, you'd be surprised if Amer didn't play well. But he is and so is the entire Meralco squad. The challenge now is trying to maintain their electrifying start.

Their import will have something to about that.

"Big impact siya samin talaga. May rebound tapos may rim protector kami," Amer said, talking about Stephenson and how the import-laced conferences generally affect how they play as a team.

"Sobrang yun yung kulang talaga sa team namin. Nakakuha kami ng like Alex, sana maging consistent siya at tuluy-tuloy ang panalo namin," he added.
