In a close affair, the Elasto Painters needed a late 11-1 run to steal the victory from Blackwater.
Rain or Shine's title defense has been far from being a smooth ride so far in the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup but it remains perfect.
The defending champion Elasto Painters scored their third win in a row after taking care of a gritty Blackwater side, 95-88, Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, joining idle Meralco for the early lead in the mid-season conference.
Rain or Shine raised its record to a clean 3-0 mark to stay on top while the Elite remained winless after three games.
In a close affair, the Elasto Painters needed a late 11-1 run to steal the victory from Blackwater. Down three, Maverick Ahanmisi tied the count at 87-all with a booming three before Jay Washington gave Rain or Shine the lead for good with another three of his own with less than three minutes to go.
Washington then dropped the dagger in the final 1:39 as the veteran forward connected on another trey.
Despite the win, head coach Caloy Garcia believes his wards could still play a little better as the Elasto Painters won all three of their games so far by the skin of their teeth.
"We can't be happy with the way we're playing. I think we can still do better especially on execution," Garcia said.
Import Shawn Taggart led the way for ROS with 26 points and 12 rebounds while Ahanmisi and Jericho Cruz scored 12 apiece. James Yap added 11 points.
Washington only managed six but his only two baskets proved to be the difference for the Elasto Painters.
Greg Smith once again did trhe heavy lifting for Blackwater, going for 34 points and 20 rebounds but it was still not enough for a win.
