FAMILY TIES. Randy Alcantara is the man responsible for resurrecting Mapua's high school program.
Three key cogs in Malayan High School of Science’s first championship since 2000 will be moving up to the Seniors for Mapua Institute of Technology.
Finals MVP Bryan Samudio, sweet-shooting Sherwin Concepcion, and do-it-all Jasper Salenga are all set to become Cardinals.
And the reason for them is simple.
All three of them didn’t want to leave home – a home that has seen them grow into consistent contributors under the guidance of a father figure who has also seen them grow into young men.
Talking about how head coach Randy Alcantara changed the culture for the once cellar-dwelling Red Robins, Salenga shared, “Pagpunta namin lahat dito, zero pa talaga kami so kailangan trabahuin lahat sa practice. Wala kay coach kung magaling ka o hindi, ang importante, willing kang gumaling at tumulong sa team,” he said.
He then continued, “Kay coach, pantay-pantay lang. Kung sinong gustong magtrabaho, yun yung magtatagal sa loob (ng court).”
Such has been evident in Salenga himself whose numbers of 14.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and two steals do not wow and yet, he has nonetheless emerged as a more than capable player who can help out any team.
And all of that is rooted in his mentor’s trust in him and his trust in his mentor – a relationship that has been nurtured from the very first time he set foot in Manila. “’Di ko talaga maisip na makakaya ko rito kasi ang layo sa family. Pero hinding-hindi pinadama sa amin ni coach Randy yun,” he said.
A recruit from Pampanga, the now 19-year-old is nothing but thankful for the unwavering faith from his coach. “Para sa akin, sobrang laking bagay na nandyan si coach Randy kasi hindi lang pagiging coach ang focus niya. Actually, siya na nga yung naging pangalawang tatay ko pagdating ko ng Manila,” he shared.
He then continued, “Unang-unang pagdating ko pa lang dito, siya na yung nag-aalaga sa amin, nagga-guide sa amin. Kahit anong problema, malalapitan namin siya.”
In the end, that long-awaited and much-wanted NCAA championship was all for their “pangalawang tatay” in Alcantara. “Binalik lang talaga namin kay coach lahat ng tiwala niya sa amin,” he said.
