BACK-TO-BACK. Cignal came out on top in two knockout matches in a row.
It will be a battle between first-timers in the Finals of the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup.
Rookie team Cignal made it so after dropping a 23-point hammer on challenger Tanduay, 88-65, at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig, Tuesday.
The top-seeded Hawkeyes will now wage war against fellow Finals first-timer Racal. The best-of-three series commences on Thursday still in the same venue.
The San Beda College-backed squad stamped its class in the middle periods, 57-26, to come out on top in its second straight knockout match. This, after having dropped Game 1.
“Credit to the boys because they kept believing in the system,” coach Boyet Fernandez said.
The Rhum Masters actually started strong and built up a seven-point lead after the opening salvo only to fall victim to Cignal’s onslaught in the second and third quarters.
By the final frame, the Hawkeyes were up by 31.
While their lead went down by a bit, Fernandez’s boys would not be threatened the rest of the way. “It was a total team effort,” he said post-game.
Pamboy Raymundo showed the way with 17 points and was backed up by Javee Mocon with 15 markers and Jason Perkins with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.
