MAYBE NEXT TIME. Kiefer Ravena promised that he and Alab Pilipinas will come out with much more fire now with their backs to the wall.
SINGAPORE – Kiefer Ravena’s last competitive game was in late February.
Since then, he has been mending to an injured right hand.
And so, in his first game of significance on Sunday at the OCBC Arena, the 23-year-old acknowledged that he was yet to be back to 100 percent.
In fact, after playing close to 30 minutes, he had to say through chuckles, “Sa ibang butas na ako humihinga.”
That was also evident to Filipino-American Josh Urbiztondo who was mostly tasked to stay in front of Ravena. “That was the first time I ever played against him and you know, you could tell, he doesn’t really have his legs under him,” he said.
He was quick to add, however, “But he still played really well. He’s a talented kid and he’s got a bright future.”
Indeed, in his first game of significance in over a month, the former two-time UAAP MVP had 16 points, two assists, and two rebounds.
More than that, he was the top scorer for Alab Pilipinas and the reason why they were still fighting until the bitter end.
Of course, the bitter end had Singapore coming out on top, 77-67, and pushing the Filipinos to the brink of elimination.
And that is exactly why even though he played well, Ravena said much more was needed. “Siyempre, kulang kasi talo e. Wala namang performance na masa-satisfy ka dahil natalo,” he expressed.
Nonetheless, the Philippine side’s newest representative remains upbeat about their chances. “It’s a matter of preparing for and then getting Game 2,” he said.
The good news is that Ravena is has gotten an even better feel around his new teammates. As he put it, “Wala na rin namang problema adjustment-wise kasi nakalaro ko na ‘tong mga ‘to one way or another. Sa mga ganito rin naman kasi, wala nang adjustments and ang kailangan na lang talaga is you find a way to win.”
