THE STANDARD. Marcus Elliott and league-leading Hong Kong dominated another opponent and now stand just one more win away from the Finals.
With their dominance all throughout the 2016-2017 Asean Basketball League, it has long seemed to be only a matter of time before Hong Kong rolled into the championship round.
The Eastern Long Lions may very well be less than a week away from entering the Finals after dropping a 40-point hammer on Saigon, 114-74, on Wednesday at the Southorn Stadium.
Marcus Elliott was everywhere and collected 23 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds, and two steals while Josh Boone contributed a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double in the home team’s emphatic showing in Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinals.
Tyler Lamb added 23 markers of his own as Hong Kong built up an advantage of as much as 37. They weren’t threatened for all of the second half and now stand just one more win away from the championship round.
The Heat actually put up a strong start and had the tally tied early in the second until Elliott and Lamb hooked up for 13 points in a 22-6 tear to send Hong Kong way ahead, 46-30.
The Long Lions stamped their class anew on an opponent they have now beaten four times in five tries. In all, they took full advantage of error-prone Saigon and had a massive 34-5 margin in terms of turnover points.
The first-year squad hopes to have no problems in making its first Finals as it shoots for a sweep on Saturday.
For the Heat, it was Lenny Daniel who fronted the losing effort with 33 points and 13 rebounds. They would need the same numbers and much more from the other guys as they try to stay alive when the series swings to Vietnam.
