PAYOFF. In a span of three days, Jackson Corpuz went from the D-League to the PBA.
Jackson Corpuz – not Rey Nambatac, not Sidney Onwubere, not Rey Nambatac – was the shining star in Racal’s failed bid for a championship in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup.
Averaging 12.4 points and 7.1 rebounds, the six-foot-four forward did anything and everything to lift the Tile Masters to what would have been their first franchise title.
Of course, in the end, Javee Mocon and Cignal came out on top – leaving Corpuz and Racal ruing their missed opportunity. “Sana (nakuha namin) kasi nandito na e. Kaya lang, na-short,” he expressed post-game last Thursday.
He also added, “Siguro bawi na lang next conference.”
Unfortunately, Corpuz won’t be getting that chance to do so anymore.
Fortunately, that’s all because he’s no longer in the PBA D-League – he’s already in the PBA.
Corpuz played his first professional game on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
And not only did he play, he started for Mahindra.
Beaming even though they lost, the newest PBA player said afterward, “Sobrang saya. Tinatawag pa nga lang yung pangalan ko sa first five, sobrang saya ko na.”
He then continued, “Tinitignan ko yung jersey ko pagpasok sa dugout, nakalagay PBA, wala na yung D-League. Sobrang sayang nakuha ko na yung pangarap ko at makakalaro ko na yung mga idol ko.”
Without a doubt, Corpuz has come a long way from the Philippine Christian University product who went undrafted in 2014. “Nung nagpa-draft ako, nawalan ako ng pag-asa. Buti may sumuporta pa rin sa akin na ituloy yung pangarap ko,” he said.
Fast forward three years later, and the undersized paint player undoubtedly made the most out of his D-League stint. “We wanted to sign him up even earlier, but with Racal’s success in the playoffs, we didn’t want to disrupt their run,” Floodbuster team manager Joe Ramos shared.
Now he is among the best of the best, Corpuz could not hide his happiness. “Sobrang saya lang talaga. ‘Di ko ine-expect na after ng (D-League) Finals, makukuha ako ng Mahindra,” he said.
He also added, “Isa pang kinagulat ko, ang laki agad ng tiwala sa akin. Ang tagal pa ng minutes ko.”
And of course, he’s not stopping there just yet. “Extra work pa. Double o triple effort pa, sobrahan pa talaga ng effort,” he said.
