Falcons defeat Chiefs in overtime
Fil-American Tyrus Hill of Adamson University slams it home.

Adamson completed a come-from-behind 61-56 overtime win over the gritty Arellano University Chiefs Monday in the 2017 FilOil Flying V Pre-season Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Falcons transferee Jerie Pinggoy made his presence felt when he nailed his first point of the game from the three-point arc that knotted the match at 48 with 20.8 seconds remaining in regulation before pouring four points in overtime to help Adamson escape with the win.

Don Ochea led the San Marcelino-based squad with 14 points and six rebounds while Fil-Am rookie Tyrus Hill scored 10 points. Jerrick Ahanmisi got nine points while Cameroonian Papi Sarr registered nine markers and grabbed 18 rebounds for the young Falcons squad.

“Well that's why we're here. As you can see we're still a work in progress. We got some new guys, we just have to stay within the course,” said Adamson coach Franz Pumaren.

“Still a lot of polishing to do. But at least, we're the only UAAP team that won today,” added Pumaren, who pointed the losses suffered by UAAP squads De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila against NCAA teams earlier in the opening day.

The NCAA Season 92 runner up Chiefs went up 48-45 with 1:01 left in regulation after a strong drive to the basket by Kent Salado.

But Pinggoy, who transferred to Adamson last year after seeing action with Ateneo in the UAAP two years ago, coolly drilled the tying triple on top of the arc after Arellano failed to convert in their possession.

Salado milked the clock in the next play but threw his jumper way left as regulation time expired.

The Chiefs took a 54-52 lead in the extra five minutes but Adamson unleashed a telling 9-2 rally to steal the victory.

Salado had 14 points and eight rebounds, Archie Concepcion finished with 13 while Lervin Flores scored 11 for Arellano.
