Heavy Bombers stun Green Archers in pre-season opener
Teytey Teodoro nailed 17 points to power Jose Rizal University past De La Salle University in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Premier Cup opener.

Jose Rizal University pulled off an amazing stunner Monday after shocking the UAAP defending champion De La Salle University, 85-81, as the Heavy Bombers opened their 2017 FilOil Flying V Pre-season Premier Cup on a high note at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Teytey Teodoro sparked the Kalentong-based squad’s sizzling scoring run in the opening minutes of the fourth that gave JRU enough cushion to repel the late game comeback attempt of the Green Archers.

“I keep on telling them prior to this game against La Salle, sabi ko sa kanila na nothing to lose for us, nothing to lose for us and everything to gain for JRU and kayo,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses. “Marami kayong matutunan against La Salle because they are a champion team. So, nag-respond naman sila by playing. The effort was there, by playing great defense.”

Teodoro exploded for 17 points but his biggest contribution for the Bombers was his 5-point spurt that broke the last deadlock in the payoff period.

The veteran guard drilled a three-pointer to break a 65-65 tie with 8:26 remaining in the game and followed it up with a steal and a layup for JRU’s five-point advantage.

DLSU unleashed is dreaded full court defense to cut their deficit to 83-81 with only 1:43 left in the game.

Gio Lasquety and MJ Dela Virgen saved the day for JRU with their split charities in the closing moments of the match to seal the win.

“Actually, they were able to come back through our mistakes,” Meneses added. “Buti na lang we recovered at the right time.”

Jed Mendoza finished 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, Darius Estrella had 11 while Dela Virgen tallied 10 markers and spiked it up with three boards, three assists and a pair of steals for JRU.

Reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Ben Mbala had a monster game with 22 points, 16 boards and two blocks but failed to save the Taft-based squad from absorbing its first loss in the tournament after sweeping last season’s contest.

Aljun Melecio and Ricci Rivero scored 17 and 13, respectively, for DLSU.
