Pirates survive Blue Eagles in thriller
CJ Perez of Lyceum of the Philippines University dropped 13 points to lead the Pirates to a victory against former team Ateneo de Manila.

CJ Perez showed his scoring brilliance when Lyceum of the Philippines University made a searing run to build a 10-point lead in the last four minutes of the game.

But he also almost threw the game away with a late game turnover against his former team Ateneo de Manila.

Luckily, the breaks of the game smiled on the Pirates side after Blue Eagle ace Mike Nieto missed a potential game-winning triple as LPU escaped a 90-89 thriller Monday in the 2017 FilOil Flying V Pre-season Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

“We were lucky down the stretch,” said a relieved Pirates coach Topex Robinson. “Our players just didnt give up.”

“We know how good (Ateneo) coach Tab is,” he added. “I'm learning a lot from coach Tab. For me this is an experience that will sharpen us.”

Jaycee Marcelino scored 14 points while Perez had 13 markers and six rebounds for the Pirates. Jasper Ayaay finished with 13, Ralph Tansingco had 12 while Jayvee Marcelino and Spencer Pretta chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Intramuros-based squad.

Up, 86-76, after a strong drive by Perez, who spent a year of residency with Ateneo after transferring from San Sebastian College but was cut because of academic problems, the Blue Eagles slowly chopped down their deficit to 90-89 with a 13-4 run highlighted by timely outside bombs including a Nieto trey with just 72 ticks remaining in the match.

After two missed opportunities from both sides, LPU had a chance to seal the win on their next possession but Perez lost his handle in a crossover attempt and the Pirates turned the ball over in mad scramble for the loose ball with 6.4 seconds left.

Nieto had a good look from the rainbow arc off a handoff but the ball just graced the ring as time expired.

Nieto had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Ateneo, runnerup of the 79th UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

Thirdy Ravena got 14 points while Chibueze Ikeh and Anton Asistio finished with 13 markers each for the Katipunan-based cagers.
