Just taking its cue from the underdogs who won out on opening day, the University of the East came in ready and raring for war in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
And at the end of it all on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, the retooled Red Warriors found themselves the victors over a favored foe.
Alvin Pasaol sent a statement that this is his team now and UE sent Ateneo de Manila University to its second straight setback, 72-71.
Hit by the graduation of Paul Varilla and exits of Bonbon Batiller and Edgar Charcos, coach Derrick Pumaren turned to Pasaol to show the way.
The second-year star responded by turning in 23 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, three assists, and a block, all while leading the Red Warriors in taking control for most of the matchup.
However, Pasaol also muffed on a couple of charities in the last 30 seconds that left the door open for the Blue Eagles.
Fortunately for UE, Pasaol and Mark Olayon played honest defense on Chibueze Ikeh who missed the would-be game-winner.
Just two days earlier, Ateneo was also upset by Lyceum of the Philippines University. On the same day, Jose Rizal University trumped De La Salle University.
Still, Pumaren was quick to admit that UE is far from where he wants it to be. “We’re still a long way and we’re still working our way up,” he expressed.
Mike Nieto paced the Blue Eagles with 15 points.
