THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM. On their third try, Juwuan White and Ateneo barged into the winners circle.
Following back-to-back losses that came down to the dying seconds, Ateneo de Manila University is a winner at long last in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Emerging Mike Nieto and surprising Juwuan White made sure of that as the Blue Eagles claimed command from the get-go before cruising to a 89-72 victory versus debuting University of Sto. Tomas on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Katipunan-based squad suffered two consecutive heartbreakers to begin the tournament.
Nieto continued to lead the way for Ateneo with 15 points and Isaac Go backstopped him with 10 markers of his own.
The Blue Eagles began the game with a 29-14 flurry and never looked back en route to their first win of the tournament. Still, head coach Tab Baldwin was quick to point out, “We’re still a work in progress,” he said.
For the Growling Tigers, newcomer Jordan Sta. Ana topped the scoring column with 11 points. Debuting reinforcement Steve Akomo left much room for improvement after only posting nine points and eight rebounds.
