GOT THIS. J-Jay Alejandro gifted new head coach Jamike Jarin his first win in NU.

The head coach was new and the style of play was different in National University’s debut in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.

Still, it was the old reliables who showed the way to victory.

J-Jay Alejandro’s short stab in the last 16 seconds proved to be the difference for the Bulldogs as they eked out a hard-earned 87-85 triumph over Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The win was the first in the new era in Sampaloc under head coach Jamike Jarin.

However, Jarin was far from happy with how he and his team got it. “We didn’t deserve to win. With how we played, we didn’t deserve to win,” he expressed.

Indeed, NU found itself behind by as much as 14 just in the first quarter and still by five inside the last four minutes.

It was at that point that Alejandro, Matt Salem, and Dave Wilson Yu combined for the 6-1 run that tied the tally at 85. “The reason why the result went to our side is they got tired,” Jarin said.

With the Generals unable to find the basket under the last two minutes, Alejandro’s fall away jumper inside the arc with 16.5 ticks to go turned out to be the game-winner.

The Bulldogs’ team captain wound up with 25 points, nine rebounds, and four assists while Salem added 20 markers and seven rebounds of his own.

Transferee Jerome Garcia paced EAC with 16 points. Unable to hold on in the endgame, however, they suffered a setback to open the tournament.
