ENDINGS. Tyler Tio had the game-winning 3 and Thirdy Ravena had the game-sealing D for Ateneo.
In a heavyweight bout that had all the combinations and counters on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, it was Ateneo de Manila University that proved to have the knockout blow.
Matched up against the taller and more experienced Bong Quinto, Tyler Tio dribbled his way into a good look before draining the game-winning three in the Blue Eagles’ 78-76 victory versus Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Tio, who is yet to play in the UAAP, top-scored for the Katipunan-based squad with 17 points, the last three of which came in the dying moments. “We have a lot of confidence in Tyler,” head coach Tab Baldwin expressed after he and his boys improved to 2-2.
From a deadlock of 74-all inside the last minute, Jeo Ambohot’s couple of charities put the Knights up by two, 76-74.
The two teams then traded defensive stops until Tio took possession at the top of the key, showcased his handles, and launched a cold-blooded triple over the outstretched arms of Quinto with 17.3 ticks to go on the clock.
The ball touched nothing but net and in the ensuing play, Thirdy Ravena corralled Ambohot’s try down low to seal the deal in Ateneo’s second straight win. “Thirdy made a good defensive stand in the end,” Baldwin said, nothing but appreciative of that kind of effort.
Ravena wound up with 15 points and six rebounds to help the Eagles come out on top of a chippy contest that featured 52 fouls combined and 65 free throws in all. “You gotta play those games, those games that are tough,” Baldwin said.
For Letran, it was Rey Nambatac who fronted the effort with 25 points. Without an answer for Tio’s clutch trey, however, they suffered a setback to start the tournament.
