The Philippines definitely cannot afford to showboat in the upcoming SEABA tournament or risk being a victim of an epic upset.
Gilas Pilipinas is the overwhelming favorite in the 2017 SEABA Championships, however, Andray Blatche would like the national team to keep its focus ahead of the sub-regional joust which starts Friday.
The Philippines definitely cannot afford to showboat in this upcoming tournament or risk being a victim of an epic upset.
"The number one thing is winning," Blatche said Wednesday in the team's final press conference before taking the court at the Big Dome. "As long as we all come out and do our job and win, that's enough for me."
While the brains behind Gilas acknowledge the fact that our ASEAN neighbors have improved in their level of play, the Philippines should still win SEABA with games to spare.
But that's not a reason to take things a little less serious.
"I don't want us to go out there and thinking we're going to have it easy," Blatche said.
"For sure a lot of teams will think that they have a chance to knock us down. We have to stay focused and we have to compete," the former Brooklyn Net added.
While Blatche is coming into a new Gilas team with a lot of new faces, the 30-year-old center sees a smooth adjustment.
The whole team closing in on winning SEABA defintely helps with the entire process.
"I'm trying to get to know the guys on and off the court. One thing I could say, I know we have the same goal in mind so it makes it pretty much easy," he said.
