BIG. Alvin Pasaol and Clark Derige stood strong up against Steve Akomo.
Without any legitimate big man, the University of the East is leaning on Clark Derige and Alvin Pasaol to provide an inside presence.
The two did just that, and more, on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre – up against highly-touted Steve Akomo, no less.
Derige posted 16 points while Pasaol had for himself a bounce back game in the Red Warriors’ 80-67 conquest of University of Sto. Tomas in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Derige and Pasaol, both forwards, came up big for Derrick Pumaren, especially in the final frame where their team broke the game open. "We will be a smaller team, but being small can actually be a strength for us," the head coach said.
He then continued, "That is what I'm expecting from these two - to carry us."
The two also held their own on defense as they took turns, along with Wilson Bartolome, in limiting Akomo to only 14 points and 14 rebounds. The Cameroonian has long been regarded by Tigers' mentor Boy Sablan as a big part of their future.
Following a dispiriting loss to Jose Rizal University, Pumaren got just what he wanted from his wards in this one. "They're the veterans now so I expect them to carry us," Pumaren expressed.
Pasaol wound up with 15 points while Mark Olayon also chipped in 13 markers to help UE improve to 2-1.
On the other hand, the Tigers dropped their second game in a row.
