Knowing full well what Teytey Teodoro brings to the table, Jose Rizal University is using the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament to find out what else it has.
MJ Dela Virgen and Darius Estrella showed up for the Heavy Bombers on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, showing the way as they shut down late-charging Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 82-74.
Top gun Teodoro still had 11 points, but sat out most of the final frame. “Gusto ko kasing bigyan ng confidence yung iba. We know Teytey is a big-time player,” coach Vergel Meneses said.
He then continued “I just wanted to give confidence dun naman sa iba.
In his place, it was Dela Virgen who took charge with a team-high 17 points. Estrella, former NCAA Juniors MVP, showed flashes as well with nine points, three rebounds, two steals, and solid defense on the likes of Rey Nambatac and Bong Quinto.
Still, JRU had to sweat for its third consecutive victory as its once 12-point lead shrunk to as small as 74-78 with 1:11 remaining.
Off a timeout, however, Gio Lasquety had the quick counter for the Bombers with a baseline jumper. After consecutive defensive stops, Dela Virgen then finished off their rise to a record of 3-0 with two free throws.
Despite their league-leading record, Meneses sees much room for improvement for his wards. “We’re not that strong and talented. I hope we play consistent defense para makakuha kami ng easy baskets katulad kanina,” he said.
Nambatac had 25 points to show the way for Letran which is yet to etch a mark in the win column after three games.
