HIGHER CLASS. The Ateneo twosome of Kai Sotto and Rence Padrigao made all of the difference for Batang Gilas against Singapore.
Not unlike their kuyas, Batang Gilas sent a statement that they remain the kings of the hill in the SEABA Under-16 Championship.
Rence Padrigao impressed, Kai Sotto towered above all, and the Filipinos made quick work of Singapore, 108-42, on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The home team was on-point right from tip-off and scored nine straight points to start the game.
They would never look back from there as Padrigao and Sotto, by themselves, had as many points as all of their opponents at the half.
Batang Gilas’ lead remained in double-digits for all but four minutes in their convincing victory to begin the tournament. Big brother Gilas Pilipinas opened their campaign with a 107-point obliteration of Myanmar.
In the end, Sotto posted 17 points, five rebounds, and three blocks while Padrigao had 14 markers and six dimes. “Okay na okay yung nilaro ni Kai at ni Forthsky. Na-control natin ang rebounds because of Kai then si Forths naman, nadala niya yung team sa offense and defense,” a satisfied coach Mike Oliver said post-game.
Terrence Fortea also chipped in 14 points for the Philippines.
The Filipinos (1-0) will face Indonesia (0-1) on Monday. “Hopefully, ganun pa rin ang magiging intensity natin then,” Oliver expressed.
For the Singaporeans, it was Lok Yao Tor who topped the scoring column with 10 points. They will get a one-day break before meeting 1-0 Malaysia on Tuesday.
