CLUTCH CREDENTIALS. For the second straight game, Yi Kang Teoh and John Tang had the steady hands for Malaysia.
Thailand was giving Malaysia all it had in the 2017 SEABA Under-16 Championship.
Come the endgame, however, Malaysia proved to have the difference once more in the form of Yi Kang Teoh and John Tang.
Teoh again had a crucial assist and basket, Tang did himself better, and the Malaysians fought off a very game Thai side, 74-62, on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The two teams were only separated by three points with six minutes remaining before point guard Teoh had four points and an assist for a 62-53 Malaysia lead.
Still, Thailand kept coming and closed in at 62-66 until Tang sealed the deal, once and for all, with back-to-back bombs from long-distance.
In the end, Teoh had nine points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals while Tang had 16 markers.
Wong Thiam Mun also tallied for 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and six steals for the Malaysians who start the tournament with back-to-back wins.
A day ago, it was also Teoh and Tang who showed the way as Malaysia warded off Indonesia.
They will next face 0-1 Singapore on Tuesday.
Hiran Boateng and Natthanon Chayapiwat scored 12 points each for the Thais who suffered a setback to start SEABA.
They try again for their first win against Indonesia (0-1) also on Tuesday.
