POWER. Steve Akomo has remained a force down low for UST.
University of Sto. Tomas is on the board in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
And lifting them there is the very same guy expected to bring them back to great heights.
Cameroonian Steve Akomo posted another big-time double-double to fuel the Growling Tigers to a 63-55 triumph over University of Perpetual Help at the Filoil Flying V Centre, Sunday.
Akomo, touted by head coach Boy Sablan as the future in Espana, has been solid in his first three outings in the preseason. However, none of those turned out to be wins.
This time was different as the six-foot-eight center pounded in 11 points while also pulling down 18 rebounds, all while protecting the paint for UST. “Sinasabi lang ni coach Boy, try lang nang try,” assistant coach Tylon Darjuan, filling in for head man Boy Sablan, said in the post-game conference.
Backstopping him was transferee Carlo Escalambre who had 10 points of his own.
It was stout defense, led by the Cameroonian, which only allowed seven points in the third that broke a tied tally at the half and awarded a 10-point lead for the Tigers entering the final frame.
In all, Akomo and his teammates shackled down the Altas into shooting below 30 percent from the field.
With their first win in four games, the Tigers gained much-needed confidence to, at long last, make noise. “At least, nagkakakumpiyansa na kami. Halos puro rookie yung team namin kaya malaking bagay itong (panalo) sa amin,” Darjuan said.
Gab Dagangon paced Perpetual with 11 points. They fell to 1-2.
