Cone on Thompson: ‘He is the nicest man off the court’
MR. NICE GUY. Scottie Thompson just keeps on impressing the winningest coach in the history of the PBA.

Now in his second season in the PBA, Scottie Thompson is still doing anything and everything.

That much was evident in Ginebra’s big-time wire-to-wire win against San Miguel last Sunday.

There, Thompson put himself all over the court as always and recorded 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and three steals for his troubles.

It was also his rebound and couple of charities in the dying moments that helped the Gin Kings put down erstwhile league-leader San Miguel once and for all.

Having coached the very definition of an all-around player for five conferences now, head coach Tim Cone said all of that is already what he expects. “Nothing Scottie does at this point surprises me anymore,” he expressed post-game.

While that may be the case on the court, Cone then went on to say that Thompson keeps on impressing even when he’s not playing basketball. As he put it, “The thing that surprises me the most is not his game, but the way he is off the court. He is the nicest man off the court.”

He then continued, “He is a true gentleman, he’s a tremendous teammate, and he’s humble from head to toe.”

But of course, all of those off-court traits also spill over onto the court. “The stuff that he does, that’s humble stuff – the rebounding, the defense, all that stuff. The offense, the shooting, that’s just very secondary for him,” the multi-titled mentor shared.

All in all, Cone said the player known as “Mr. Triple-Double” back in college is a dream to coach. “The only guy I can compare him with, and I’ve said this many times already, is Johnny A (Abarrientos). They’re a dream to coach – they’re incredibly skilled and, after a while, they do so many things you just kinda go, ‘Wow,’” he said.
