STONE COLD STUNNER.
Wangs Basketball rose to the occasion and clipped Centro Escolar University from behind, 88-87, for its first win in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Tuesday at the JCSGO Gym in Quezon City.
Trailing 82-72 with 2:41 to play, the Couriers staged a 16-5 tear, punctuated by a pair of Jason Riley freebies to grab a one-point lead, 88-87, with 22.9 seconds left.
Rod Ebondo and Art Aquino had chances to put the Scorpions ahead, but the two flubbed their shots from close range as time expired.
“Yung mga bata, uhaw sa panalo,” a beaming coach Pablo Lucas said. “Sumunod sila sa gameplan at yun ang nagpanalo sa amin.”
Michael Juico came up big in the payoff period as he unleashed 12 of his 26 points in the frame, to go with a total of eight rebounds and two assists.
Tim Habelito tallied a near double-double of 12 markers and nine boards while Christian De Chavez added in 11 for Wangs.
The CEU meltdown wasted Ebondo’s scintillating 27-point, 20-rebound, and 4-block showing.
JK Casiño had 17 markers and four assists in the loss.
In the second game, Batangas asserted its territory against debuting Marinerong Pilipino to come away with a 92-82 victory.
Joseph Sedurifa led the Batangueños with 17 points, four assists, and three rebounds while Cedric de Joya got 14 markers and four dimes.
Earvin Mendoza also went 3-of-6 from threes to wind up with 11 points as he had half of Batangas’ 6-of-19 shooting from threes.
“We really want to be known as a defensive team. I told them that we are not known for our offensive prowess, but hopefully, if we make it to the quarters, we would be known as a defensive team,” coach Eric Gonzales said.
The Batangueños slowly pulled away from their foes and put up a 15-point lead, 81-66, after a Mendoza three with 6:44 left.
The Seafarers, though, made a late run and cut the deficit to eight, 82-90, with 1:57 to play before Dave Moralde committed an offensive foul in the final two minutes which was followed by a turnover from Jeff Javillonar.
Pao Javelona captained Marinerong Pilipino with 18 points and four rebounds while Julian Sargent poured 15 markers in the losing effort.
