After losing the rights of the 2019 FIBA World Cup to China, the Philippines is getting another shot at hosting basketball's biggest international tournament.
FIBA confirmed Thursday that the country made the shortlist of candidates to host the 2023 World Cup. The Philippines is teaming up with Indonesia and Japan to host the tournament.
Also in the shortlist of possible hosts are Russia and Turkey while Argentina and Uruguay also have a joint bid in the works.
According to FIBA, countries still have until August to file candidacy for the 2023 World Cup.
China, after beating the Philippines, will host the tournament for the first time ever in 2019 and will feature a record 32 teams.
The home and away Asian qualifiers will start later this year. Gilas Pilipinas, which won the 2017 SEABA Championships in convincing fashion earlier this month, is in Group B with Japan, Chinese Taipe, and Australia.
