Terrence Romeo hit the game winner against the Aces as Globalport advanced to the quarterfinals as the no. 8 seed.
With its back against the wall, Alaska unleashed the Beast against Globalport.
It was not enough.
Terrence Romeo ended the Aces' 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup campaign as the flamboyant star led the Batang Pier to a pulsating 107-106 win over the Aces Sunday at the MOA Arena.
After Abueva put Alaska up, 104-103, with 21 seconds to go, Romeo provided the answer for the Batang Pier, hitting a booming three to push Globalport on top, 106-104, leaving nine seconds on the clock.
Calvin had the chance to force a tie in the next Alaska possession but he missed a layup against the defense of Stanley Pringle. Batang Pier import Justin Harper then hit one of two free throws for a three-point lead with three seconds to go.
With one last attempt for overtime, Simon Enciso failed to connect on a corner three and Chris Exciminiano made a meaningless putback to seal the final tally.
In taking this playoff for the no. 8 seed, Globalport arranged a quarterfinal matchup against no. 1 Brgy. Ginebra with the Gin Kings holding a twice-to-beat advantage.
"I guess we surprised a lot of people. No one imagined us to be in this situation, to be in the quarterfinals," head coach Franz Pumaren said as his team managed to enter the next round despite a disaster 0-4 start.
"I guess today's game is a testament that the boys, they don't want to go on a break yet," he added.
Harper led the Batang Pier in scoring, dropping 32 points on top of 17 rebounds as Globalport erased an early 14-point deficit. Romeo added 26 while Pringle was good for 21 points.
Alaska, which will miss the playoffs for the first time in the Alex Compton era (nine straight conferences), got 32 points from import Cory Jefferson.
Abueva scored a new career-high of 31 points to go along with 13 rebounds and three assists.
