"There's no excuses, you play even if you're 100 percent or not. I couldn't let my teammates go out there by themselves so I did what I can." --- Joshua Smith.
Import Joshua Smith didn't start for TNT for Game 1 of its quarterfinals series against Meralco Monday.
It was an early adjustment on the part of the KaTropa coaching staff. It was also a decision born out of necessity if you choose to look at it another way because Smith was actually sick.
He had the flu.
"A little bit, I wasn't 100 percent today but I wasn't going to let my teammates go out there by themselves," the hulking Smith said as TNT managed to go up 1-0 in a best-of-3 against the Bolts despite him playing less than 20 minutes.
"I tried to do whatever I can to help," he added.
While obviously not in peak form, Smith did still manage to score 19 points in near-perfect shooting.
He scored 10 of those 19 points in the third as the KaTropa started to break away from the Bolts for good.
"They brought me in to be aggressive and try to help the team win. As long as I'm able when I go out there, I'm gonna be aggressive and whether it's scoring, passing, or rebounding, Ill' do it," he said.
"There's no excuses, you play even if you're 100 percent or not. I couldn't let my teammates go out there by themselves so I did what I can," Smith added.
