BIG ENDING. UE scored a preseason-ending win that will do nothing but give them momentum heading into their preparations for the UAAP.

The University of the East will not be advancing in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.

Still, how they have closed out their campaign is nothing but promising – if head coach Derrick Pumaren is to be believed.

Alvin Pasaol put the Red Warriors on his shoulders once again and carried them past Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 81-77, on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

“Pasaol is our main man. This is his team right now,” Pumaren said of his incoming second-year star who tallied 20 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks.

He also added, “He has taken over for us and he has shown it here in the preseason.”

Indeed, it was Pasaol who had all but four points in the 11-4 run that broke off a tie of 64-all tie and built a 75-68 advantage in favor of UE with two minutes remaining.

The Knights would not be able to come any closer.

Mark Olayon chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds of his own as the Red Warriors wrapped up their preseason with win number three out of eight. “That was our main objective in this game. Right at the start, we talked na we want to end our Filoil stint on a winning note,” Pumaren expressed.

The UE mentor went on to say that the tournament-ending win will do nothing but give them momentum heading into their preparations for the UAAP season. “We got a lot of things to work on, but I must say that we are slowly getting the right way to play,” he expressed.

On a more personal note, the win was much welcome for Pumaren who has been wearing a brace on his right knee for about two weeks now. “Two more weeks pa raw ‘to. Nahihirapan din ako, but I have to do my job,” he said, talking about his dislocated patella.

For Letran, Jerrick Balanza showed the way with 20 points.

The loss drops them to a 1-5 standing ahead of their rivalry game with San Beda College on Sunday.
