ANSWERING THE CALL. Aldrech Ramos did exactly what head coach Chito Victolero told him to do.
In a heavyweight bout between powerhouse teams, it was a role player who delivered the telling blow.
Losing a 13-point lead in the last three minutes and clinging to a one-point advantage, Star was rescued from further harm by reserve big man Aldrech Ramos last Sunday.
The sweet-shooting forward found himself with a good look before firing a booming triple that would prove to be the dagger for the Hotshots with 15 ticks to go.
After the gutsy win, he did not mince words in expressing his joy in being a huge help in drawing first blood in the best-of-five semifinals series. “Masayang-masaya kasi siyempre crucial yung basket na yun. Nakatulong ako sa team kahit papaano so happy ako,” he said.
In the end, Ramos had 11 points to his name, three of which came from the biggest basket of his career.
And it almost wasn’t meant to be – if not for the full faith of Chito Victolero. “I told Aldrech, he’s there to spread the floor. Tentative pa nga siya in the last two minutes,” the Star head coach shared.
He then continued, “Tentative pa siya in the last two minutes kaya I told him, if you’re open, shoot lang. Good thing he responded to my challenge.”
Indeed, the fifth-year veteran admitted that his mentor’s reminder played in his head the moment he found himself with a good look. As he put it, “Actually, nung una nga, medyo nagte-tentative ako. Kaya nga sabi ni coach, kung libre ako, itira ko.”
He then continued, “Kaya nung nakita ko na yung chance, ni-grab ko na. Luckily, na-shoot siya.”
Actually nung first medyo nagtetentative ako nun, nakita niyo di ko tinira, na shot clock ata. Sabi ni coach, kung libre ako, itira ko, yung nakita ko yung chance na yun, grinab ko na. Luckily naman nashoot siya.
