BREAK FREE. San Miguel head coach Leo Austria acknowledged the great defense Star played on Marcio Lassiter.
San Miguel was down by 13 points to a red-hot Star side last Sunday.
And yet, the battle-hardened Beermen kept coming and even got to as close as one point.
At the forefront of it all was Marcio Lassiter who poured in half of his 12-point total in the timeframe.
Of course, in the end, Aldrech Ramos doused cold water on the Beermen and delivered Game 1 to the Hotshots.
Still, San Miguel head coach Leo Austria saw just what needed to be different for Game 2.
“Fortunately, nung huli, nagkaroon pa (si Marcio) ng 12 points and four triples, but it was a bit late. So definitely, next game, I want him to step up right away from the start,” he said.
To do so, Austria said he and his staff will draw up a gameplan that will release their sharpshooter from the clutches of defenders like Mark Barroca, Allein Maliksi, Justin Melton, and PJ Simon. “Nakita niyo naman, they respect Marcio a lot and everywhere he goes, talagang kung sa Tagalog, inaasawa na ng bantay niya,” he said.
In Game 1, Lassiter hoisted up 14 shots and only made four.
Fortunately, Austria knows full well that his Beermen will be nothing but more motivated to even up the series. “It’s a must-win situation (for us in Game 2). We cannot afford to have a 0-2 (deficit) in a best-of-five,” he expressed.
He then continued, “Although 0-3, nakabalik kami, dapat 0-1 pa lang, bumawi na kami.”
In 2015, San Miguel became the first team to recover from a 0-3 deficit before snatching away the PBA Philippine Cup championship from Alaska.
