HOTSHOT. J-Jay Alejandro caught fire in a must-win game for NU.
National University head coach Jamike Jarin called J-Jay Alejandro “one of the best shooters in college” on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Scoring 25 points built on seven triples, Alejandro proved his coach’s claim correct as he shot the Bulldogs over luckless College of St. Benilde, 104-88.
Behind the veteran sniper, Jamike Jarin’s wards fanned the flames of their playoff chances in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament. “J-Jay naman, we all know he’s one of the best shooters in college right now. If he’s open for half a second, 90 percent of the time, he’s gonna make it,” he expressed after his team improved to 4-3.
Alejandro poured in 19 points in the first two quarters as NU raced to a 56-44 halftime advantage.
The Blazers kept coming and shaved their deficit to as low as 12, 83-95, with less than four minutes remaining only to see Alejandro and Issa Gaye front the Bullpups’ 9-5 finishing kick.
Gaye wound up with 10 points and six rebounds as NU counted a total of five players in double-digits.
Jarin’s wards now move on to a must-win matchup with 4-2 University of the Philippines on Wednesday. “We’re going to enjoy this, but we know we still need to win another one,” he said.
There, the victor would give itself a massive boost for one of the two remaining quarterfinals berths in Group B.
On the other hand, CSB bows out of the tournament burdened by a seven-game losing slide. Rookie Matthew Johnson bannered their effort with 21 points, all from threes.
The Blazers, now under the guidance of TY Tang, will now gear up for the NCAA Season following a 1-7 showing in the preseason.
