ON A HIGH. Arellano is riding a winning streak heading into the NCAA Season.
Runners-up last year, Arellano University will not be making the next round of the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Still, they will be moving on to the bigger stage and the brighter lights of the NCAA Season riding a winning streak.
On the back of the continued all-around brilliance of Kent Salado, the Chiefs got the better of shorthanded University of the Philippines, 73-68, on Monday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Struggling to start the preseason with four losses in a row, Salado and troops rang off four consecutive victories to close their campaign at 4-4. “In terms of winning, parang nabalik na nga namin yun, pero kailangan pa rin talaga naming maging consistent,” head coach Jerry Codinera said.
The heady playmaker made sure his team kept rolling as he got going right from tip-off.
It wasn’t until the second, however, that his teammates followed suit and Arellano pushed forward a 23-13 quarter for a 43-33 halftime lead.
The Fighting Maroons clawed back to as close as 65-67 inside the last five minutes only to go cold from the field.
Without all of Diego Dario (personal), Paul Desiderio (personal), and Juan Gomez de Liano (injury), State U was unable to find any offense in the endgame. Consecutive possessions ended with misses from Jun Manzo, Jarrell Lim, Gelo Vito, and Ibrahim Quattara.
The Chiefs were only more than willing to take advantage and went on a 6-3 run to end the game.
Salado wound up with 17 points, seven rebounds, and six assists while Lervin Flores contributed 16 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks to help Arellano salvage a respectable finish to the preseason. A year ago, they finished as runners-up.
UP was paced by Lim with 16 points, six assists, and five rebounds.
At 4-2, they will figure in a knockout bout for the fourth and final quarterfinals berth in Group B against National University on Wednesday.
