Lucky Beermen tie semis series against Star at one game each
Bouncing back from a failed Game 1 comeback, San Miguel has tied the best-of-5 affair at one game apiece.

Simply put, San Miguel got lucky.

Despite some sloppy late-game executions, the Beermen managed to survive Star in Game 2 of their 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup semifinal series, taking a slim 77-76 victory Monday at the MOA Arena.

Bouncing back from a failed Game 1 comeback, San Miguel has tied the best-of-5 affair at one game apiece.

Up by three, 77-74, San Miguel gave up an and-one play to Mark Barroca with 43 seconds to go. Fortunately for the Beermen, the veteran point guard missed the bonus to keep a one-point lead.

Looking to land the dagger, June Mar Fajardo then turned the ball over to Barroca as the Hotshots had one final chance to go up 2-0 in a race-to-three affair.

In another lucky sequence, Paul Lee ended up missing what would have been the game-winning floater, allowing the Beermen to hold on for the victory.

"We're lucky the last shot of Paul Lee did not connect. I think we have to work really hard on our next game kasi Star is really determined to win," head coach Leo Austria said.

"Kahit one point yan, tatanggapin ko ng buong-buo," he added on the win.

The Beermen waxed hot from deep in the early goings, setting the foundation for a 16-point lead they would later get in the third quarter, 46-30.

But Star would pick up momentum after that behind the effort of import Ricardo Ratliffe inside the paint.

With Ratliffe dominating the rebounds, the Hotshots would claw their way back, even taking the lead at multiple points in the fourth quarter.

The last time Star tasted the upper hand however, was in the final 5:43 of the game after Justin Melton's booming three put the Hotshots up, 72-70.

Charles Rhodes scored back-to-back buckets to push San Miguel back in the driver's seat and Arwind Santos buried a three of his own, his only field goal for the game, to give the Beermen some much-needed separation, 77-74, with 3:47 left.

Rhodes finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for San Miguel while Alex Cabagnot added 12. June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter both came off the bench to add 12 and 11 points respectively.

Ratliffe led the way for the Hotshots, going for 25 points and 35 rebounds, 4th-most in league history.

Game 3 is set for Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
