With his spot on the 5-on-5 Gilas team looks to be secure, the Beast has expressed his desire to return to his 3x3 roots and play for the Philippines in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Manila.
After making his triumphant return to Gilas Pilipinas, Calvin Abueva is looking forward to play for a different type of national team.
With his spot on the 5-on-5 team looks to be secure, the Beast has expressed his desire to return to his 3x3 roots and play for the Philippines in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Manila.
A regular in the 3x3 World tour with Manila West, Abueva would've made the Philippine team set to compete in the 2017 World Cup in France if not for Alaska's decision to block his participation.
Next year is a different story though, and Calvin is raring to go if given a chance.
"Gusto ko rin maglaro pero di pumayag yung management. By next year, [sana] maka-join ako sa kanila," Abueva said Wednesday during the official send off for Chooks-Pilipinas to France.
While he's not playing this time around, Abueva will settle on being a mentor to the team that' headed to France Friday for the World Cup scheduled on JUne 17-21.
With the team bannered by youngsters that includes Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, and Jeron Teng, the Beast's advice is rather simple.
Use your head.
"Kasi dito [3x3], dapat diskartehan. Hindi lang individual ang gagawin mo dito," Abueva said.
"Ma-diskarte ka dapat talaga kung paano mag-shoot, paano dumepensa. Kasi may rules yan eh, kailangan sundan mo yung rules kesa sa 5-on-5," he added noting on the difference of 3x3 compared to the usual 5-on-5 game.
