Mbala powers Green Archers to a Final Four spot
Ben Mbala dropped 32 points to lead De La Salle University to the semifinals.

Ben Mbala played another monster game, dropping a double-double to power De La Salle University to a Final Four slot at the expense of Far Eastern University, 78-53, Wednesday in the 2017 FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player was just unstoppable as he muscled his way to 32 points while grabbing 19 rebounds for the Green Archers, who will take on the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates on Friday.

Aljun Melecio and Ricci Rivero added 13 markers apiece while Andrei Caracut had 11 for the Taft-based squad, the only UAAP team in the semifinals after LPU, reigning NCAA champion San Beda College and Jose Rizal University occupied the other Final Four seats.

Head coach Aldin Ayo lauded Mbala’s performance but also gave credit to his boys’ great teamwork in a must-win game.

“’Di lang naman si Ben lahat naman ng mga players motivated kasi syempre ‘yung laro quarterfinals. Knockot game. May sense of urgency to win,” he said.

The Green Archers blitzed the Tamaraws early as DLSU built a 35-22 lead at halftime before putting the game away for good, 76-51, with just 2:37 left in the duel.

Arvin Tolentino and Richard Escoto had 10 points each for FEU.

LPU clinched a semis spot after eliminating San Sebastian College, 86-71, behind the scorching outside shooting of Spencer Pretta and CJ Perez.

Pretta knocked down five triples for 17 points while Perez had 14 markers and 11 boards.

Meanwhile, the Red Lions defeated University of the Philippines, 65-56, to set up a Final Four showdown with the Heavy Bombers, who knocked out Adamson, 67-56.
