REMAINING RED. San Beda put the clamps on Teytey Teodoro to claim its 10th win in as many games in the preseason.
San Beda College has not won against Jose Rizal University in over a year.
Not anymore after Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Drawing contributions from all over the lineup, the Red Lions took the fight out of Jose Rizal University for an 80-64 decision in the semifinals of the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Robert Bolick showed the way again, of course, and had 22 points, six assists, and three rebounds in the NCAA champions’ 10th win in as many games in the preseason.
Now, San Beda is one win away from a clean sweep of the tournament – something that had only been done twice before. “I’m happy we made it this far. Again, of course, credit to the boys,” a satisfied head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
Still, this one didn’t come easy as the Heavy Bombers were standing strong and found themselves only chasing down a four-point deficit at halftime.
The Red Lions’ lead was still at four, 48-44, late in the third until Bolick and Arnaud Noah connived to front a 22-13 push that mounted a 70-57 advantage in their favor.
Fernandez got many of his players to step up including little-used Clint Doliguez who scored six straight points during that run. “Kenmark (Carino) and Clint didn’t play in the first half, but we really wanted to fortify our rotations,” the mentor said.
He then continued, “The depth of our team, it’s the responsibility of the players to step up.”
Carino and Doliguez did just that as JRU was not able to threated for the entire endgame they were on the floor.
The result was quite the relief for the faithful over at Mendiola who saw their team go winless against the Heavy Bombers in the previous NCAA season. “I heard that last season, we didn’t win against JRU. I’m happy that now, we got back at them,” Fernandez expressed.
Noah wound up with 16 points and six rebounds while AC Soberano added 17 points built on four triples.
However, it was San Beda’s defense on Teytey Teodoro that Fernandez shared was the key to their win.
Teodoro only had nine points and only converted four of his 13 attempts.
In his place, it was Ervin Grospe who topped the scoring column with 17 points. They finish the preseason with a still respectable 6-4 record.
The Red Lions now await the winner between Lyceum of the Philippines University and De La Salle University.
The Finals is scheduled for Sunday still at the same venue.
