Fil-Nigerian AJ Edu stands at roughly 6'9" and is only 17 years old.
It may be a while before 17-year-old AJ Edu actually makes the Gilas Pilipinas lineup but current national team head coach Chot Reyes is already raving about the limitless potential of the Fil-Nigerian prospect.
Standing at roughly 6'9", Edu completed his second practice with Gilas Thursday, shattering all expectations by Reyes.
"Unbelievable," Chot said on the towering teenager.
"We really like him. We've been eyeing him for a long time now and now that we have a chance to work with him, we love him even more," he added.
More than Edu's height, the most obvious thing you'll see once you him in action, Reyes is more impressed with AJ's intangibles that are rarely seen on players at his age.
"He's very focused," Reyes said.
"Serious and very coachable. It's hard to find the level of seriousness and maturity on a 17-year-old. We're very excited. We're very very happy to have him," he added.
Reyes is so high on Edu that if he had his way, he'll bring the toweing Fil-Nigerian to Taipei to experience the Jones Cup at some capacity.
However, with Edu set for China to team up with former Adamson star Encho Serrano for the FIBA U-18 3x3 Cup, that plan will be shelved, for now.
"Gusto ko nga isama yan sa Jones Cup kung pwede lang," Reyes said.
Aside from representing the Philippines in the U-18 3x3 Cup set for June 23 to July 3 in Chengdu, Edu is also expected to make his Batang Gilas debut next year.
