Chot Reyes said he had Kai Sotto as Gilas Pilipinas' 12th man before ultimately deciding not to include the towering 6'11" center for now as to avoid future complications regarding his eligibilty.
National team head coach Chot Reyes is pretty serious with the whole Gilas Pilipinas youth movement.
How serious you ask?
With the announcement of the official Southeast Asian Games lineup, Reyes considered to include 15-year-old Kai Sotto to the team set to compete in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia come August.
In fact, Reyes said he had Sotto as Gilas Pilipinas' 12th man before ultimately deciding not to include the towering 6'11" center for now as to avoid future complications regarding his eligibilty.
"We were really thinking long and hard about Kai Sotto, we had him as our 12th guy for the SEA Games," Reyes said of the Ateneo High School standout.
"But in the end, we were worried it might affect his eligibility because you know, he will be playing with pros so we didn't want to affect his eligibility," he added.
Even without Sotto, who won a SEABA gold medal with Batang Gilas last May, the Philippine team for the 2017 SEA Games remains loaded with young talent.
19-year-old Kobe Paras will join Kiefer Ravena, Ray Parks, Kevin Ferrer, Baser Amer, Troy Rosario, Raymar Jose, Carl Bryan Cruz, Almond Vosotros, Christian Standhardinger, Mike Tolomia, and Von Pessumal in the SEA Games.
