The Philippines became the latest victim in Belgium’s surprising run in the 2017 FIBA 3X3 Under-18 World Cup.
The Filipinos had no answer in the endgame for Vincent Peeters as the Belgians ran away with an 18-14 decision on Sunday in Chengdu, China.
Peeters drilled the go-ahead triple as well as a couple of charities in the final minute to make sure Belgium’s slate remained spotless heading into the semifinals.
Encho Serrano and AJ Edu did their all to will the Philippines back into the game, but Peeters' triple inside the last two minutes broke off a tied tally of 12-12 and boosted the Belgians ahead for good.
Still, it was quite the run for the Philippines which will now head home having registered its best finish in the history of the FIBA 3X3 U18.
Also, Edu, Serrano, Rhayyan Amsali, and Juan Gomez de Liano were the only Asians to have made it past the preliminary round.
