Arwind Santos thinks that if this current San Miguel dynasty can complete a triple crown at the end of 2017, they can finally enter the list of true Beermen greats.
There's two sides to playing for a team like San Miguel Beer.
One is by being part of this historic franchise, you're most likely to win a title or two throughout your career.
The second side is by being a part of this historic franchise, winning just one title or two will not be enough to elevate you into a status you'll probably get with another team if you happen to accomplish the same thing.
There's just too many legendary names that have worn the San Miguel jersey since the PBA opened business. To make your mark as a member of the Beermen, you have to do legendary things.
Legendary things like winning a Grand Slam.
Former Most Valuable Player Arwind Santos thinks that if this current San Miguel dynasty can complete a triple crown at the end of 2017, they can finally enter the list of true Beermen greats.
"Grand Slam, isa yan sa history na hindi pa namin nakukuha dito sa batch na ito," Santos said after the Beermen captures the 2017 Commissioner's Cup, setting up the chase for the franchise's second Grand Slam ever almost three decades after the first.
"Kasi pag nagkaroon [ng Grand Slam], maco-compare ka sa mga players dati, kila Ramon Fernandez, Hector Calma mga ganyan. At least yung group na ito, sana makuha namin," he added.
Coached by Norman Black, Fernandez, Calma, Franz Pumaren, Samboy Lim, Alvin Teng, and Ato Agustin were just some of the legends that won the Grand Slam in 1989 for San Miguel.
Now Arwind never said that the 2017 Beermen are planning to take out the accomplishments of those legends. No sir.
Arwind is only saying that if they win the Grand Slam, they can probably join them in the list of all-time greats and that drives them now more than ever.
"Hindi sa sinasapawan namin sila, ito yung motivation namin na hangga’t maari na makakuha kami na hindi pa nakukuha ng mga players noon," he said.
As deep as San Miguel's lineup is of all-time greats, that 1989 team is the only one to win a Grand Slam. The 2017 squad is oh so close and a lot of history is riding on the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup.
Arwind knows that and he wants it. He wants that triple crown.
"Iba yun. Pag may history ka, kahit matanda ka na, wala ka na sa mundo, patay ka na, isa yun sa mga maalala ng mga taong mahilig magbasketball," Santos said.
