With 10 days to go before the 2017 William Jones Cup in Taiwan, Gilas Pilipinas finally played its first tuneup game Wednesday against the NLEX Road Warriors.

The game was a hot mess.

Although the national team managed to take a 113-112 decision courtesy of a Chistian Standhardinger game winner, Gilas Pilipinas trailed by as many as 25 points.

The team didn't even play as one until the midway point of the third quarter.

Regardless of their continued adjustments, national team head coach Chot Reyes is preaching patience, saying that Gilas will need some time to truly get back on track.

"We have no choice here, we have to be very patient with this team," Reyes said after team practice concluded Wednesday at the Meralco Gym.

"Being tasked to play in a very high-level tournament with barely two weeks of practice, it's no joke so we have to be very patient," he added.

AS Gilas rushes into the Jones Cup where they play nine games in nine days, Reyes said the national team can afford to make some mistakes here and there.

However, there's one mistake Reyes wil never tolerate with Gilas.

"They can make a lot of mistakes, we're gonna be patient with that except if they make a mistake in effort. If they don't sprint back on defense, they don't dive on the floor for loose ball, then I absolutely have no patience for that," Reyes said.

Barely escaping NLEX, the PBA's worst team based on record so far this season, in a practice game, the fiery head coach would like to see his team maintain its effort as they work their way through the system.

"It's hard to get 16 players to understand what you want to do. That's the kind of situation we are facing. We have no recourse but to stay patient," he added.

Gilas Pilipinas will open its Jones Cup assignment on July 15 against Canada.
