Gilas uprising falls short against sweet-shooting Lithuania
Losing its second game in three days, Gilas Pilipinas fell to 4-3, two full games behind Lithuania who now takes over the no. 1 spot at press time with a solid 6-1 mark.

Gilas Pilipinas now has little to no chance of winning gold in the 2017 Jones Cup.

Facing Lithuania in a crucial matchup, the Philippine rally fell short as the national team absorbed a tough 80-91 defeat Friday at the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall.

Losing its second game in three days, Gilas Pilipinas fell to 4-3, two full games behind Lithuania who now takes over the no. 1 spot at press time with a solid 6-1 mark.

Gilas was actually ahead after a competitive first quarter but a 33-19 second period in favor of Lithuania really turned the game around.

Things got ugly for the Philippines in the second half as the Europeans opened up a 20-point lead, 70-50, behind their steady and patient offense. Gilas would mount an uprising in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 10, 64-74, after a booming Matthew Wright triple but that was the closes the Filipinos could get.

With Lithuania, Canada, and South Korea all ahead of Gilas in the team standings, the Philippines will be hardpressed to end end up with a podium finish let alone win gold. However, the national team can still turn things around as favorable matchups against India and Iran round out their schedule in the annual Taipei Invitational.
