After ruling Division B of the 2015 FIBA-Asia Cup in China to earn a prompotion, Perlas Pilipinas experienced a harsh welcome in Division A after taking a beating from defending champion Japan.
The Philippine national women's team absorbed a 55-106 defeat at the hands of the Japanese at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bangalore, India to start the 2017 FIBA-Asia Women's Cup.
Perlas struggled all game long, surrendering an early 9-0 run to Japan and never really got going on offense, shooting less than 30 percent from the field.
The Japanese, who beat China for the title two years ago, led by as many as 59 points in the fourth period.
UAAP Season 79 Finals MVP Gemma Miranda led the Philippines with 17 points. Perlas will take on Australia on Monday.
