Phelps drills winner as Phoenix keeps Aces reeling
El Destructor finally drove to the basket with around two seconds left, beating his man one-on-one to make the game-winning layup at the buzzer.

El Destructor shot a dagger deep in the heart of Alaska.

Eugene Phelps drilled the game-winner Sunday at the MOA Arena, lifting the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a pulsating 95-93 victory over the Aces in the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup.

After a wild final minute ended up with both teams tied at 93-all with 21 seconds to go, Phoenix went to Phelps and the high-scoring import wasted away the time before making his move.

El Destructor finally drove to the basket with around two seconds left, beating his man one-on-one to make the game-winning layup at the buzzer.

The Fuel Masters moved to 2-0 for the conference, their best start in franchise history.

Phoenix almost didn't need a game-winner from Phelps after RJ Jazul put the Fuel Masters up, 93-91, in the final 30 seconds after he buried a booming triple. However, Chris Banchero would answer on the other end with a clutch putback to tie things up once again.

“Our vets delivered today. They showed heart and made the crucial plays. It was like a playoff game,” head coach Ariel Vanguardia said.

“We give credit to Alaska. They really make us play better,” he added.

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second quarter, Phoenix took over in the second half, taking a 10-point lead in the fourth.

But the Aces would simply not go down, countering with a 9-0 blast to retake the lead, 89-88.

Phelps dropped 29 points and 14 rebounds for the Fuel Masters while Jazul was good for 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals against his former team. Joseph Eriobiu added 14.

Alaska, which has not won a game since April 2 and is now dealing with a 10-game losing skid, got 30 points from import Buck Henton.
