FAIR PLAY. Carl Bryan Cruz was generously rewarded for his small acts of sportsmanship in the recently-concluded Jones Cup.
Little did bruiser Carl Bryan Cruz know that his small acts of sportsmanship in the 39th William Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan a week ago will be rewarded by Gilas Pilipinas' main backer.
During the nationals' post-tournament press conference on in Ortigas, the six-foot-four Alaska rookie received the Chooks-to-Go Sportsmanship Award which goes with a cash prize of PhP 100,000.
And as the giant check was handed to him, the 25-year-old shared that he never thought such reward will go his way. "I never imagined na meron palang award na ganito," he told reporters.
He also added, "I feel very honored to be tagged as a player who exemplifies sportsmanship. Sa akin naman I'm just playing my game, and as much as I can, I try to play ng malinis."
The award from the Chooks-to-Go, from now on, will be given to players who will live up to the company's aim of reviving the true meaning of sportsmanship in every tournament they will play in.
The former Far Eastern University stud was nothing but grateful to have been the first-ever recepient of the award. "Of course thank you sa Chooks-to-Go. I am nothing but honored sa award na 'to," he said.
From here, Cruz will still serve Gilas in the upcoming 2017 FIBA Asia Cup and 2017 SEA Games.
And in that light, Cruz vows to continue his ways, all for the benefit of the team and the country. "I promise to continue itong ganitong laro ko," he said.
