LIKE FINE WINE.
With LA Tenorio taking charge, Barangay Ginebra hardly encountered resistance from GlobalPort in the second quarter onwards as the Gin Kings booked their first win in the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup.
The 5-foot-9 Tenorio was in his element, firing 29 points while lacing his high-scoring output with five three-point shots to lead Ginebra to a 124-108 demolition of the Batang Pier last Sunday.
A two-time PBA Finals MVP, the veteran guard also flashed the other facets of his game after contributing five rebounds and four assists on the way to becoming the second PBA Press Corps Player of the Week this conference.
The 33-year-old bested the conference's first Player of the Week in Kevin Alas along with his NLEX teammates Carlo Lastimosa and Alex Mallari, TNT’s Jayson Castro and Troy Rosario, Star’s Paul Lee and Ian Sangalang, San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter, Meralco’s Jared Dillinger and Reynel Hugnatan, as well as fellow Gin King Greg Slaughter.
Tenorio admitted Ginebra’s complete frontcourt led by a healthy Slaughter together with Japeth Aguilar and Joe Devance made things easier for him to score, knowing the trio can control the boards.
"Kumpyansa ako kasi apat akong malaki sa ilalim. Malaking bagay yun. I think masyadong nakafocus sa ilalim kaya na-oopen up mga guards sa labas,” noted Tenorio.
But Tenorio isn’t dwelling too much on the win anymore, aware that the Gin Kings have to focus quick as they play Kia Picanto this coming Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Picanto have lost their first three games this conference, but not without a fight late in the game.
“It’s gonna be a big test for us also kung paano namin masu-sustain yung game," said Tenorio.
