With time not on their side, head coach Chot Reyes has opted to zone in of some of the weaknesses of the national team in hopes of getting Gilas to the best possible shape before taking the court in Lebanon.
Gilas Pilipinas will leave for the 2017 FIBA-Asia Cup on Saturday but the national team remains rough around the edges with less than a week before the play their first game.
In fact, the FIBA-Asia crew barely beat the Gilas SEA Games team in scrimmage during practice Thursday at the Meralco Gym.
"As you can see, the FIBA-Asia team, sa SEA Games team nahihirapan eh di ba. Can you imagine if that's China?" head coach Chot Reyes said.
Actually, we don't have to imagine that much longer as the Philippines will open group play next Wednesday, August 9, against the defending champion Chinese in a rematch of the 2015 Final.
It's an instant litmus test for Gilas that practically crammed its preparations for the Asian championships.
"But like I always keep saying, we gotta work with what we have," Reyes said.
"As you can see, we're very far from being in competitive shape so all we can do is really make the best of what we have and have fun like this kasi there's just so much we can do. We'll just try our best," he added.

"We just keep working on that because that's our weakness eh. We just have to prioritize," he said.
"We can't work on too many things because of a lot of limitations that we have. The best we can do is just focus on the things that we can control," Reyes added.
