Gilas backer issues apology for misunderstanding
Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI) President Ronald Mascariņas has issued an apology for the "embarrassing situation" he put himself in for declaring that his company is willing to finance an independent national team that will compete in international tournaments.

Gilas Pilipinas backer Chooks-to-Go has great intentions for the national team, however, the company's grand plan of sponsoring as separate and full-time Philippine squad may have been a little too farfetched.

At least for now.

Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI) President Ronald Mascariñas has issued an apology for the "embarrassing situation" he put himself in for declaring that his company is willing to finance an independent national team that will compete in international tournaments.

An independent national team made up of the very best players that will be compensated like maximum-level players in the PBA.

Apparently, that bold plan rubbed some people in the wrong way and Mascariñas has opted to humble himself to ease any tension.

"I was put in an embarrassing situation, but 'yung mga tao na nagpundar ng PBA ay parang nasaktan ko. That's why sinabi ko nga kanina, I apologize. That was never my intention," he said Thursday at the end of Gilas practice at the Meralco Gym.

Mascariñas said he never anticipated that he would offend some people with his bold proclamation although he admits that he could've thought things through a little better.

He says he just got caught by the excitement of putting together a strong and sustainable national team.

"Yun ang first impression ko," he said when asked if a full-time national team is the only way to achieve great success on the international arena.

"But pinaliwanag nga ni Commisioner na there are other ways. That's why I'm opening up options... Sila ang expert sa basketball eh. So, I'm really giving it up to them. I think they can sort out things with SBP," Mascariñas added.

"Bubusina tayo, we have to respect the existing structure, and I think they know better."

However, Mascariñas says that Chooks remains committed to helping Gilas Pilipinas and the offer of putting up a separate national team still stands, albeit they want to do it properly this time and with a more open dialogue with the PBA and SBP.

"The offer is still on the table. We just want to do it properly this time, na wala kaming nasasagasaan. So the process might take a longer time, but we want to do it the right way, na happy ang PBA, happy ang SBP," he said.

"Basta, the end objective is, still hoping kami na we can form a competitive national team, and the possibility na full time 'yun, andoon pa rin. We will continue to support that," Mascariñas added.

PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa, for his part, understands that Chooks-to-Go has nothing but support for Gilas Pilipinas.

However, Narvasa added that for the Gilas program to continue to work and flourish in the long run, all ideas must be aligned with all the concerned parties involved.

"I think it was done in a sincere effort to be able to show support for the Gilas team. You have to understand that its a sensitive issue and an issue that we’re trying to work out. Comments like that are sometimes, whether it’s meant to help, sometimes, people take it out of context. It’s always good that you clear it," Narvasa said.

"Ang akin lang dyan is everybody wants to make this program work. Everybody has a way of showing their support. Sometimes, di pa ayos yung road, and if there are bumps along the way, those have to be fixed. Kaya usually, you also have to make sure that you’re well informed. I think yun lang yun, misinterpreted lang naman. everybody understands that everybody wants to make this work. It’s for the sport, it’s for basketball, we all love basketball, and it’s for the Philippines, and it’s what we all love," the Commissioner added.
