"Congrats, Iím proud of him, whenever I see him play for the national team, I can always say in the office that I played with him." - URCC middleweight champion Chris Hofmann on former FEU teammate Mac Belo
Before becoming the URCC's only two-division champion, middleweight and light-heavyweight king Chris Hofmann had dreams of becoming a basketball player.
In fact, it was his hoop dreams that brought him to the Philippines from Switzerland, eventually finding his way into the Far Eastern University men's baskeball program.
While Hofmann only made it as far as Team B before fate showed him a different path to stardom, he got to share the practice courts with the likes of PBA and national team call-ups Terrence Romeo and Mac Belo.
Romeo has been tearing it up on the local and international stage so far, while Belo has also been leaving his mark in the pros and was also fortunate enough to fly the Philippine flag as a member of Gilas Pilipinas a couple of years back.
All three former Tamaraws have worked their way up to stardom, and while Hofmann now finds himself in an entirely different setting, he's nothing but happy for the success of his former teammates, especially Belo, who Hofmann got to spend a lot of time with.
"Especially to Mac Belo, kasi siya talaga yung teammate ko sa Team B eh," Hofmann told ABS-CBN Sports. "he was a guy who was starting also from the bottom, worked his way up."
"Congrats, I’m proud of him, whenever I see him play for the national team, I can always say in the office that I played with him. I’m really proud, it makes me happy to see someone succeed like him." Hofmann added.
As for Romeo, a former UAAP MVP, Hofmann says that The Bro was always ahead of the curve, even back in college.
"Kay Terrence naman, we didn’t train so much, he was always out of our league, but kudos."
Romeo is establishing himself as one of most talented players, not just locally, but internationally as well, and Hofmann feels that the GlobalPort star is bound to do big things in the basketball world.
"One of the best youngsters ever, almost the best player in the PBA I guess, so the future is really bright for him."
Hofmann is coming off a second successful defense of his URCC middleweight championship at URCC XXX, while Terrence Romero and Gilas Pilipinas are tearing it up in the 2017 FIBA Asia Tournament in Lebanon, and Mac Belo, now a PBA All-Star, is making a name for himself in the professional ranks with Blackwater Elite.
With other standouts like Arwind Santos, RR Garcia, Carl Bryan Cruz, Roger Pogoy, and Paolo Bugas making names for themselves in their chosen fields, we can safely say that the FEU system is doing something right, one way or another.
