Marc Pingris' final dunk to beat Kia in the 2017 Governors' Cup put him at 5,001 career points in the PBA.
With the game against Kia already in hand, Marc Pingirs admitted to go after his personal milestone of 5,000 career points.
If the Hotshots didn't ended up beating the Picanto by 47 Friday and the game was a little closer, Ping would have been perfectly happy too to go after his record another time.
But on this particular night in the 2017 Governors' Cup, everything went right for Ping and the Hotshots. He had his record and Star got the 47-point victory.
"Sabi ko importante lang naman manalo eh, kako matagal pa naman ako sa PBA," Ping said with a laugh when asked if there was already a conscious effort from Star to let him have his milestone.
"Pinaupo na ako eh, tapos nung nalaman nila na 'oh five points na lang, gusto mo pa maglaro?' 'It's up to you coach kung gusto mo' kako. 'Okay, laro ka'. Alam mo yung tiwala na binigay niya rin sa'kin? Nagpapasalamat talaga ako sa kanya," he added, talking about Chito Victolero who put him back in the game with the Hotshots in cruise control.
Pingris ended up making the final basket for Star to close out the win, a breakaway dunk that put him at 5,001 points for his already illustrious career. For the game, he had a total of 12 points and nine rebounds.
Ping is the 86th member of the PBA 5,000-point club and is the 82nd local to make it there. Among active players, he's the 24th to accomplish the feat and the 6th player from the Purefoods franchise, joining Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera, James Yap, PJ Simon, and Kerby Raymundo.
"Sobrang blessed lang, talagang nag-thank you ako kay Lord kanina," Ping said.
