Acox might not put up a 30-20 stat line but he's such a great fit for Star you'll mistake him for Marc Pingris if you didn't look close enough.
Malcolm Hill was a pretty good import for Star but the Hotshots had something in mind when they opted to go with Kris Acox for the rest of the Governors' Cup.
Hill was more of a perimeter player and the team needed a solid anchor inside. It seemed like Acox was the perfect option at the moment and the decision has paid off with Star advancing to a third straight semifinal appearance this season.
Acox might not put up a 30-20 stat line but he's such a great fit you'll mistake him for Marc Pingris if you didn't look close enough.
Actually, he's basically Marc Pingris if Ping had a slightly bigger brother from Iceland.
"Parang ako lang na lumaki ang katawan eh. Kasi yung tira niya, yung floater para sakin din eh," Pingris said on their reinforcement after Star disposed of NLEX in the Governors' Cup quarterfinals.
Acox finished with 21 points, 10 in the fourth, and 12 rebounds to lead the Hotshots.
"Pero yun nga, talagang kumukuha siya ng mga rebounds and yun talaga yung inaasahan namin sa kanya. At sobrang sipag din. Lagi niya rin sinasabihan mga guards namin na wag kayong matakot tumira kasi ako kukuha ng rebound," Pingris added.
For his part, Acox understands why Star brought him in and he's playing his role to near perfection.
"They brought me here for playing defense against bigger guys and other imports, rebounding, and other stuff. Malcolm, the other import, he's a great player, [but] maybe we didnt play the same game," he said.
"They [Star] kinda felt like they needed more with inside presence, and I just try to be that guy for them," Acox added.
