"Sabi nga nila Grand Slam kami sa semis eh." --- Chito Victolero on Star's season.
Despite not making a single Finals this season, Chito Victolero's first year as head coach of Star can still be considered a success.
After all, the Hotshots did make three straight semifinals this year. Last season? Star made zero Final Four appearances.
"I'm very happy, I'm very proud. I'm also very thankful to them [Hotshots] for the whole season," Victolero said Thursday after Star made its exit from the 2017 Governors' Cup following a sweep in the semis at the hands of no. 1 Meralco.
"Sabi nga nila Grand Slam kami sa semis eh, no excuses but considering na it's a new system, madaming new players, new coach, we achieved something this year. I'm very happy although yun nga, hindi kami naka over the hump dun sa semis," he added.
While Star never made it to the championship round this season, Victolero likes what he saw with his team and is confident the Hotshots can take a lot of positives from this year to the next.
"Lahat ng nakuha namin ngayon na magaganda, dadalhin namin yan next year. The character na na-build namin ngayon, I think that's very important for our journey next season," he said.
However, the rookie Star coach does look at some specific points where the Hotshots can improve in order to take the leap, aside from adding more talent of course.
The team chemistry, in particular, is a focus in the offseason.
"I think we need to improve sa talent. But first things first, yung chemistry namin, yun ang tututukan namin for next sesaon," he said.
"I know meron na ngayon eh, di lang ganoon ka-buo but it’s understandable kasi it’s our first season palang na magkakaasama kami," Victolero added.
